SINGAPORE – In another sign of the growing importance of Singapore’s e-sports scene, the industry will now have a place to call home.

The largest E-sports Experience Centre (EXP) was opened at the Singapore Sports Hub on Thursday (July 8) by Minister for Culture, Community and YouthEdwin Tong.

The EXP, set up by Singapore-based company Esports Entertainment Asia (EEA), is a result of an ongoing partnership with Singapore Cybersports & Online Gaming Association (Scoga).

The 12,000 sqf facility located at Kallang Wave Mall houses a comprehensive e-sports ecosystem under one roof. It features an integrated live-streaming-ready e-sports event space, pro-esports team rooms, e-sports cafe, open-concept and a LAN gaming area.

It also offers a comprehensive display of sound and video equipment, gaming laptops and consoles, as well as the latest gaming accessories and gadgets from top brands in the industry.

It will complement the Sports Hub’s partnership with Scoga which supports a host of e-sports programmes focused on the community, outreach, education and elite training, along with industry and pathway development.

Sports Hub chief executive Lionel Yeo said the facility showed its commitment to cultivating e-sports here as one that is “a healthy, positive sporting and entertainment activity for Singapore youths”.

He added: “We are also excited to welcome EXP as a new public offering which will provide a focal point for e-sports enthusiasts, pro-gamers and brands to come together.”

The Sports Hub has hosted several local and international e-sports activities and competitions in recent years like Hyperplay, an Asean e-sports and music festival organised by MCCY in 2018.

A year later, it staged One E-sports’ Dota 2 Singapore World Pro Invitational – the largest Dota 2 tournament in the region – which featured the top 12 teams from around the world.

E-sports player Kenny Cheng, 22, from Team KopiForYou, who has participated in several Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) competitions said he was pleased to know that there is now a central hub for e-sports players.

He noted: “It’s great news especially because such a facility being set up does show that e-sports is growing and perhaps this will allow the sport to be better recognised by our locals, due to the investment being made.

Malaysia-based Fundaztic, an online marketplace for P2P financing, has raised RM3 million (approximately US$720,000) within 38 minute of the launch of the crowdfunding campaign on pitchIN.

As many as 64 investors invested in the round.

“When we planned this fundraising round, we felt that our Elite Club members, who are the strongest supporters of our P2P financing deals, should be given opportunities to invest in Fundaztic. The best platform to do this was through ECF and we naturally turned to pitchIN,” Fundaztic CEO Kristine Ng said.

The company had earlier said in a press statement that the money would be used to grow Fundaztic’s team in order to increase penetration in the SME markets, while maintaining the quality of notes raised. A portion of the funds would also go into developing its own secondary market to allow for investors to trade notes before its maturity to enable them to cash out earlier if needed.

“This deal marks the very first time that two crowdfunding platforms that are regulated as Recognised Market Operators (RMO) by Securities Commission (SC) came together in a fundraising alliance. This has boosted the awareness, trust and acceptance in the industry,” pitchIN CEO Sam Shafie said.

Owned and operated by Peoplender Sdn Bhd (a Securities Commission-licenced company), Fundaztic aims to leverage technology to enhance access to both financing and investment for businesses and individuals with low entry barriers. The platform enables issuers to access easy financing through a simple online application process, while investors are able to provide funds to multiple Investment Notes in exchange for attractive returns of investments.

In June this year, Fundaztic entered into a collaborative agreement with OCBC Bank to enhance access to financing for micro, small and new businesses.

Launched in 2012, pitchIN is a registered ECF operator. To date, it has successfully funded 22 deals, including SalesCandy, MyCash Online, and Babydash. pitchIN has raised over RM24 million to date and enabled more than one thousand investors to take equity in fast growing Malaysian companies.

pitchIN also operates a rewards equity crowdfunding platform and has championed crowdfunding in Malaysia since 2012.

The virtual prepaid cards will be issued to users’ GrabPay wallet via the Grab app. The physical version will come enabled with both NFC and EMV chip technology; Grab said it will release details on how to apply for the physical cards when ready.

Both can be topped by cash through any of Grab’s 8 million ‘micro-entrepreneurs’, which include drivers, agents and merchants on the GrabPay platform. These micro-entrepreneurs will effectively serve as mobile ATMs.

The prepaid cards can be used at any merchant — both online or offline — as long as they accept Mastercard payments.

Also Read: WeChat Pay and Alipay to enter Indonesia via BNI

Grab said that this initiative will help the region’s 400 million unbanked consumers gain more access to e-payment options — part of its grand vision to become a WeChat-esque everyday app providing essential services.

Currently, GrabPay users in Philippines and Indonesia can already top up their mobile wallet using cash via Grab’s driver-partners. Additionally, in Indonesia, through a partnership with e-payment platform OVO, GrabPay users can top up their e-wallet via convenience store chain Alfamart and supermarket chain Hypermart.

“This partnership with Grab significantly advances our reach in Southeast Asia and aligns with our goal of expanding digital payments across all consumers and merchants.” said Rama Sridhar, EVP, Digital & Emerging Partnerships and New Payment Flows, Mastercard.

“Without changing infrastructure, we can now offer merchants the opportunity to tap into Grab’s user base of emerging middle class consumers, covering 1 in 6 mobile phones in Southeast Asia,” he added.

Grab plans to launch the card in the first half of 2019, starting in Singapore and the Philippines.
—
Image Credit: Grab

RinggitPlus the financial comparison site brand owned by Malaysia’s top funded fintech company Jirnexu, has announced an overhaul of their site and along with it a new site-wide chatbot functionality.

During their press conference, they have stated that these changes are scheduled to go live some time Mid-November.

New Look and Feel of RinggitPlus’ New Site

The new revamp is built to be a mobile first experience — the look and feel of it behaves like that of a native mobile app. In the age of where most consumers experience the internet through the lense of their mobile phones this direction certainly makes sense.

Mobile screenshot of RinggitPlus’ new website (beta version)

This rings true for the RinggitPlus audience as well, on the sidelines of the press conference, Fintech News Malaysia was told that roughly 80% of their visitors interact with their site through mobile phones.

The Upsides of The RinggitPlus Chatbot Experience

The new chatbot seems to be an expansion and improvement of its previous iteration in partnership with RHB.

Instead of just enabling application for RHB financial products, the functionality has been expanded to all the product offerings by RinggitPlus which includes — credit cards, savings, loans and insurance from various FSIs on their platform.

The demo also showed that, to some extent, the chatbot has some built in NLP capabilities to understand Malaysia’s unique brand of English.

Screenshot of the chatbot in action (beta version)

One nifty but simple feature that addresses the frustration that many Malaysians face (myself included) when filling up forms is the need to key-in your date of birth despite having already punched in your NRIC number.

Once users finish answering all the questions posed by the chatbot, a form will be generated for users to verify and confirm the accuracy of the details provided, the details will then be passed on the bank/insurance company for their approval process.

Before everyone jumps at us for violating PDPA rules, we’d just like to say that details shown the screenshots above does not contain real personal info and is intended for illustration purposes only.

Possible Improvements that RinggitPlus Should Consider

The chatbot is still in its beta version, so we imagine some of the kinks will be worked by the time it goes live in Mid-November so we’ll avoid bringing those points up.

One area that can definitely improve the consumer experience is to streamlining the series of questions which is asked by the chatbot which can get slightly lengthy for the loan application function contrasting with the fairly straight-forward process of the credit card application

However to be fair, there’s really no easy answer to getting all the details required by the bank without going through that series of questions – but hey maybe a spark of inspiration might take place prior to the launch.

Another cool feature that perhaps can be added in the RinggitPlus pipeline would be to consider extending a version this functionality to Whatsapp, something that banks like DBS are already doing in Singapore.

64 investors put in the maximum allowed RM3 million into Fundaztic when it went live on 17 October 2018. The deal was confirmed fully funded by pitchIN after it completed the mandatory 6 days cooling off period today.

Fundaztic CEO Kristine Ng said:

“We are overwhelmed with joy to see the love investors have shown us. When we planned this fundraising round, we felt that our Elite Club members, who are the strongest supporters of our P2P Financing deals, should be given opportunities to invest in Fundaztic.”

“The best platform to do this was through ECF and we naturally turned to pitchIN.”

Sam Shafie, pitchIN’s CEO said that:

“We knew from its strong pre-live interest that Fundaztic would be successfully funded and we were delighted to see the deal funded in just 38 minutes.”

“Fundaztic is also special to us because it is a fellow Registered Market Operator with the SC, albeit in the P2P Financing sector. This deal marks the very first time that two crowdfunding platforms that are regulated as Recognised Market Operators (RMO) by Securities Commission (SC) came together in a fundraising alliance.”

According to Sam, “This has boosted the awareness, trust and acceptance in the industry. We were very pleased that Fundaztic decision to raise a portion of its funds through ECF as it validated the power of equity crowdfunding. We thank them for choosing to raise on pitchIN.”

According to a press release, Fundaztic is pitchIN’s 22nd successful equity crowdfunding deal, and the latest addition to the equity crowdfunding platform’s 100% successful deal rate since their 2016 launch. Reportedly, pitchIn has raised over RM29 million for Malaysian companies to date.

In March, Shanghai issued its first batch of licenses for autonomous vehicle (AV) road tests to SAIC Motor, BMW and NIO. As of the end of September, AVs had driven over 15,000 kilometers on the city’s roads.

Shanghai’s Municipal Economic and Information Committee has said that no collisions have occurred in that time and testing has not affected traffic flow in the city.

TuSimple has operations in the US and China, with Chinese R&D centers in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hebei. The company has developed Level-4 driving technologies—fully autonomous within an “operational design domain (ODD),” therefore not covering every driving scenario.

The company has been working with Shaanxi Automotive and Sinotruck to provide driverless trucks to the Chinese market by 2019.

Shanghai’s city officials initially opened up 5.6 kilometers of public roads for testing but extended this to 37.2 kilometers in September. At the time over 90 companies had applied for licenses. Vehicles are currently being tested in Nanhui and Jiading Districts.

Driverless trucks have been the focus of increasing amounts of research in China. In September 2017, JD announced that it was cooperating with SAIC MAXUS and Dongfeng Motor Corporation to roll out driverless trucks with the Chinese government. Earlier this year, Dr. He Xiaofei, former president on the company’s research division, left to set up his own self-driving truck venture.

Just months later, in May, retail giant Suning announced that it had been testing autonomous trucks in Shanghai, albeit on private roads. The company said its vehicles have also reached Level-4 self-driving capabilities.

The storefronts along Washington’s bustling H Street Northeast are lit up with familiar names and logos: Petco. Whole Foods. CVS.

There is also a Starbucks.
That fingerspelling is one way to spot the coffee giant’s first U.S. signing store, where 24 deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing employees run the shop using ASL. The store debuts on Tuesday after being converted from a standard Starbucks location to make the design and technology more accessible. It’s a step, employees and advocates say, toward boosting employment opportunities for the deaf community while also immersing hearing individuals in deaf spaces. And it’s a show of support from one of the world’s largest corporate brands.

“My identity is accepted here,” said Crystal Harris, a barista at the signing store. “Deafness has many faces.”

The store is just blocks from Gallaudet University, a 150-year-old institution and the world’s only university designed for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The shop mirrors Starbucks’s first signing store, which opened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2016. Customers from the outside can spot “Starbucks” written out in fingerspelling beneath the main logo and on large table umbrellas. And on the inside, what may appear like any other Starbucks cafe has been specifically laid out and decorated to celebrate deaf culture.

One entire wall, for example, is covered by a multicolored mural commissioned by a deaf artist and Gallaudet faculty member. In fingerspelling, the mural depicts a lowercase “d,” representing deafness, an uppercase “D,” representing deaf identity, an eye to represent visual connections, a hand holding a coffee cup, and other symbols showing merging of deaf and hearing cultures.

(Joshua Trujillo/Starbucks)

Customers can communicate in ASL or write their orders on a tech pad. Rather than wait to hear their names called at the end of the bar, customers look up to a screen showing when their drinks are ready. The store was also remodeled to maximize light and open lines of sight — high top tables or tall stacks of cups, for example, limit visibility for people signing to each other. Non-signing customers are also encouraged to use visual cues. Rather than sign that the store didn’t carry chamomile tea, for example, one employee waved his hand across his neck — signaling “no” — and then pointed to a printed menu with other options.

Camille Hymes, Starbucks’s regional vice president for the Mid-Atlantic, said the company chose D.C. for its proximity to Gallaudet and because of the city’s ties to activism for the deaf community. Using the store as a profitable business model, Hymes said, Starbucks can be an example to other companies of “using our scale for good.”

Adam Novsam, a Starbucks utility analyst and a company deaf leadership member, said he had heard from “deaf communities all over the world that they wanted this space.” Even as a Starbucks employee, Novsam said that it can be frustrating to go into other Starbucks or coffee shops and face constant communication barriers. He always has his order typed out on his phone, for example, “to accommodate the other person.”

Store manager Matthew Gilsbach moved from California’s Bay Area to run the signing location. At one point in his three and a half years at the company, Gilsbach said he was stunned to meet a deaf Starbucks district manager.

“I thought, wait, there’s a deaf district manager?” Gilsbach said. “What’s going on?”

The Starbucks signage includes fingerspelling on the walls and large table umbrellas. (Joshua Trujillo/Starbucks)

Any disbelief that a deaf person could take on a management or executive role is precisely the kind of stigma Starbucks and deaf community advocates aim to combat. Howard Rosenblum, chief executive of the National Association of the Deaf, said that companies may hire deaf employees at lower levels, but those opportunities rarely extend up the chain.

Some companies show signs of progress: Microsoft’s chief accessibility officer, Jenny Lay-Flurrie, is deaf and has fought to expand accessibility for employees with disabilities. Still, the deaf community’s rate of unemployment and underemployment sits at a staggering 70 percent, Rosenblum said.

“The manager is always a hearing person because there’s a perception of limited ability with deaf people,” Rosenblum said.

Not so at the H Street Starbucks. Employee Kylie Garcia had just been promoted from a barista to a shift supervisor. Garcia grew up as the only deaf individual in a non-signing, hearing family, and she knows firsthand how difficult it is for deaf people to find jobs. Garcia previously worked in a Starbucks kiosk at a Target store where her sole job was to make drinks — never interacting with customers and often being shut out of conversations with other baristas.

“People turned down offering me jobs because they aren’t willing to take the risk,” Garcia said.

Pamela Pipes, a hearing barista who is also a sign language interpreter, moved from Raleigh, N.C., to work at the D.C. signing store. Here, “the tables have turned,” Pipes said, in that hearing customers are going to have to figure out how to navigate and communicate in deaf spaces.

Sitting across from her, Harris joked that during phases of the remodel, some customers were still stumped. A few waited to hear their names at the end of the counter. Another walked in and, as if to signal that he wanted a large drink, held his hands in front of him about two feet apart.

The store will continue to collect feedback from customers and employees, and Starbucks may eye another city for the next signing store. But this week, Novsam saw a dream fulfilled. Two nights before the Starbucks opening, Novsam walked down H Street to see the mural beaming yellows, pinks, greens and blues.

“The vibrancy moved me,” Novsam said. “It made me stop in my tracks. And it gave me tears.”

Malaysia is one of the fastest-growing e-commerce markets in Southeast Asia. The industry kicked off in 1998 with the launch of Lelong, followed by AirAsia, eBay and iPay88.

E-commerce started picking up pace in 2010-2012, where major platforms like FashionValet, Mudah.my, Rakuten Malaysia (which was later closed), Carousell, Groupon, Hermo.my, Lazada and Zalora was introduced to the market (Source: ecInsider, entrepreneurcampfire).

A pre-Eid survey conducted by Shopee from last April 2 to 9 provides us good insights into Malaysians’ unique shopping characteristics. Nearly 140,000 respondents from all over Malaysia took part in the survey.

Below are the findings from the survey:

Nearly 85 per cent of the respondents are below the age of 35, proving that the adopters of e-commerce are generally young;

The highest number of respondents are recorded from Selangor, making up more than 20 per cent of the total number of respondents;

East Malaysians comprise 20 per cent of the respondents as they find online shopping more convenient and gives them access to a wider assortment of products;

As much as 80 per cent of respondents start making preparations for Eid (Raya) from a month before Ramadan, the holy months of Musims;

Around 90 per cent of respondents regularly shop online, at least once a month;

Nearly 95 per cent of respondents cited price and promotions as the main reason that they prefer to shop online;

Additional pull factors that draw users to shop online include convenience, product variations and other incentives, such as free shipping and zero commissions, as well as platforms that offer secure payment methods;

Interestingly, the top-5 categories purchased by female respondents during this pre-Raya period include men’s clothing (which ranks the highest, even above women’s clothing and women’s bags and purses), and men’s shoes;

On the other hand, top-5 categories purchased by male respondents are men’s clothing, accessories, men’s shoes, men’s bags and wallets and muslim fashion.

(Source: ThesunDaily)

How the industry is growing

The e-commerce penetration rate in Malaysia is roughly five per cent of the total retail market, although it is a combination of the travel and products purchases.

The e-commerce sector has recorded significant growth in 2016 and contributed RM74.6 billion, or 6.1 per cent to the gross domestic product (GDP), from RM68.3 billion, or 5.9 per cent in 2015. Hence, the industry is growing exponentially and will continue to grow in the next few years, as more SMEs are willing to adopt the technology/idea of venturing online.

(Source: The Star.com)

Current trends:

SME

A recent FedEx-commissioned study on trends being adopted by SMEs in Asia Pacific (APAC) has revealed a high adoption of new technologies among local SMEs. According to the study, Malaysia ranks fourth (among nine APAC countries surveyed) in digital platform implementation and third in adopting Industry 4.0 technologies.

Nearly 61 per cent of local SMEs are optimistic that the e-commerce platforms will help contribute to increased revenue growth in the next 12 months. Sixty-nine per cent of Malaysian SMEs have incorporated Industry 4.0 technologies into their operations such as mobile payments, automation software, and Big Data/analytics in particular. The survey also shows a significantly high adoption rate of mobile payments among Malaysian SMEs at 90 per cent.

(Source: The Star.com)

Consumer:

Malaysia has high rates of e-commerce usage. Malaysia boasts of 15.3 million online shoppers (50 per cent of the total population) and 62 per cent of mobile users use their devices to shop online.

Online shoppers are often motivated to make purchase on the below factors: price advantages, product range, and availability of reviews. Shoppers also look for free shipping, convenience, and exclusive deals offered by online stores.

The topmost purchased categories are fashion & beauty, electronics, and sports & hobbies.

However, there are other categories that are most likely to expand, such as home décor, furniture, household, groceries, and health & supplements.

Some of the popular e-commerce sites in the country (not necessarily in that order) are:

Mudah.com

Lazada.com.my

Zalora.com.my

Lelong.com.my

eBay.com.my

Amazon.com.my

Fave by Groupon

Taobao.com

Alibaba.com

Shopee.com.my

11th Street.my

Hermo.my

Carlist.my

Favourite e-commerce players

Lazada.com.my and Shopee.com.my are especially aggressive this year. Both come with zero per cent commission and Shopee is going even further with free shipping module and zero per cent transaction fees, it is no wonder they both are the favourite merchant/buyer platform to go.

As of mid of this year, Lazada has around 60,000 sellers on board, a significant rise from 25,000 sellers as of December 2017. Lazada’s monthly traffic is estimated at 45 million (as of Feb 2018).

As for Shopee, it has disclosed that it currently there are more than 1.6 million users. Its monthly traffic is estimated at 12.5 million (As of Feb 2018). Though it has lesser traffic compare to Lazada, the Shopee mobile app were downloaded by more than 5 million users, ranking it first in Malaysia’s most downloaded e-commerce app.

There are plenty of challenges that a seller is facing in today’s e-commerce industry. A few of them are

1. Exposure

Getting your products online is the easy part, but attracting visitors to your store/product and eventually converting them into sales take more than just a few clicks on the web. Besides having a good products, it requires a lot of knowledge, experiences, trial and error, patience and not to mention, money. Which also explains why sellers would prefer to kickstart their online business through third-party platforms like Lazada, 11street and Shopee. But even with that, it is not that easy.

2. Adoption

Again, the idea of selling online might sound easy especially when we were to start with third-party marketplaces. But for retailers, manufacturers and business owners, e-commerce is a new venture altogether. In most cases, sellers would realise that adapting to the e-commerce industry requires team effort.

From the basic of products photography, graphic design and content creation, you need professionals if you wish to execute them well. Then comes social media marketing, Google advertising, Google marketing, website analysis, online business analysis and strategic assortments, all this require talents to execute. Traditional business owners might find it hard to adapt to the industry and usually end up as just another person who have their products online.

3. External risk

With the convenience of technology and shipping, many drop-shippers are facing this issue, where the consumer buys directly from the manufacturer in China. This is a huge problem when Lazada opened up Taobao exposing local buyers to their products because many local sellers are also importers, who buy from China and sell them in local market. This has posed a huge threat to local sellers because the price war has become tougher than it was before. Sellers have to work harder to build themselves as a brand and win over buyers from trustworthiness and credibility.

Major investments/exits/shutdowns

Alibaba’s investment in US$4 billion in Lazada is the biggest funding round in Malaysia so far. And the biggest casualty is the shutdown of Rakuten.

The future

The Malaysian e-commerce industry is growing rapidly and will continue to grow. As compared to other Asian countries like China or Taiwan, it is way behind and could be considered as an infant in this industry. Experts believe that sellers would move towards the offline to online (O2O) business model, where online will complement offline and vice versa.

Also, online marketing will become harder. As we are fed by so much advertisements everyday through our smartphones, marketers will need to be extra creative if they wish to capture consumer attention, perhaps that’s where Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality will come in place.
