How do you capture governments’ and the publics’ attention to a heavily polluted area that’s nearly the size of France, located in the Pacific Ocean?

Creative agency AMVBBDO came up with an ingenious solution that not only garnered the consideration of official governing bodies, but also average citizens and celebrities alike.

‘The Trash Isles’ is the “world’s first country made of trash” that global non-profit Plastic Oceans Foundation hopes will be the Earth’s last of its kind.

On World Oceans Day, the organization and Lad Bible teamed up to submit an application to the United Nations, calling for ‘The Trash Isles’ to be identified as an official country. If successful, other countries would become obliged to help clean it up, as per the laws of the UN.

‘The Trash Isles’ managed to fulfill all criteria to become a country and subsequently began recruiting citizens via online mediums. An official passport, currency, and flag were even designed for its people.

Its 20,000-strong population includes renowned personalities such as Al Gore, Sir David Attenborough, Chris Hemsworth, Gal Gadot, Mark Ruffalo, Jeff Goldblum, Ezra Miller, Andy Serkis, Jason Momoa, Gerard Butler, and Dame Judi Dench, amongst others.

“I think it’s a very innovative and creative way to bring attention to a problem that is often not seen,” announced Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
